Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of music therapy on pain, anxiety, and discomfort behavior of patients during burn dressing change.

Method: The convenience sample of 30 with burn was nonrandomized. A quasi-experimental study of nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. While the control group with 15 patients was not receive any additional intervention during burn dressing change, the experimental group with 15 patients was received music therapy intervention, using headphones connected to a CD player during burn dressing for three days. The self-report questionnaires regarding pain and anxiety were competed at the points before and after burn dressing change. The measurements taken were frequency of medication for analgesics during dressing change. Discomfort behavior was observed and recorded, using McLachlan¡¯s scale during burn dressing change.

Results: Pain scores in experimental group with music therapy were significantly lower than those in control group. There were no differences in the frequency of medication for analgesics between two groups. Scores of anxiety and discomfort behavior in experimental group were significantly lower than those in control group.

Conclusion: The findings suggested that the music therapy may reduce pain, anxiety, and discomfort behavior during burn dressing change.
